Split Flame Burner

Steag Energy Services (formerly ESA) has developed the Split Flame Burner impeller to provide a low cost method for reducing NOx emissions from swirled burners. The Split Flame Burner is a replacement burner impeller tip. As shown in the accompanying graphics, the Split Flame Burner impeller has three symmetric semi-blocked regions. These regions deflect the coal particles to form three concentrated, fuel-rich coal streams. This produces alternating fuel-rich and air-rich streams from the burners. As the coal devolatilizes, the fuel-bound nitrogen burns in a fuel-rich flame, where it is converted to N2. This is how NOx emissions are reduced.

Geometry for the Split Flame Burner design has been detailed with 3D solid models and CFD modeling of the air and coal particle flow. With these tools, the design can be custom tailored to a given installation, to optimize separation of fuel and air for low NOx production
