CFD Modeling Experience

Steag Energy Services (formerly ESA) has employed CFD modeling for a broad range of boiler related problems. As shown in the sample projects described below, Steag Energy Services's (formerly ESA) modeling began with comprehensive modeling of the combustion and pollutant formation occurring the boiler furnace. From there, modeling was expanded to include the complex flow fields established by swirled burner registers and tips, and the distribution of air through windbox ductwork. Many of the furnace models have been used to assist in the design of various types of NOx control technologies including low-NOx burners, overfire air systems, selective non-catalytic reduction and natural gas reburn.

CFD model rendering of simulated combustion characteristics of low-NOx burners and overfire air installed on Cinergy's Gibson Unit 2.  ESA's CFD model was used to refine the design of the low-nox retrofit.
