Slagging and Fouling Problems

Slag accumulations cause many operational problems inside the furnace. Some of these problems include:

  • Frequent soot-blowing, decreasing tube life
  • Poor heat transfer
  • Diverted gas flow
  • Superheat/reheat imbalances
  • Damaged tubes from slag falls
  • Increased pressure drops
  • Unavailability of full load
  • Decreased boiler efficiency

Slagging is caused is caused by improper burning of problem coals. In many cases coal problems can not be avoided and another way around slagging problems must be found.

ESA has experience dealing with slag problems in coal fired boilers. Using extensive knowledge of the combustion process ESA has solved slagging problems for clients. By varying operating parameters and testing various operating configurations, an optimum configuration can be determined which reduces slagging problems without disturbing normal operation.
